Yellowjackets lose dramatic match against Eisenhower High, 3-1
Senior middle blocker Zamantha Moctezuma’s performance was a bright spot in yesterday’s disappointing loss to Eisenhower High.

Colton, CA—In a dramatic rematch with Eisenhower High School, the Colton Lady Yellowjackets volleyball team suffered another defeat, losing the league match in four sets, 3-1.
The two teams previously faced off at Eisenhower High on September 17, with the Eagles winning that match 3-1, as well. Coming into this game, the Lady Yellowjackets were looking for some friendly revenge.
However, this was not meant to be. In a game filled with close calls, exciting serves, and lengthy volleys, Eisenhower was not to be denied.
The Eagles came out strong in the first set, taking advantage of several moments of miscommunication by the Yellowjackets to take the set 25-17. The Yellowjackets couldn’t find consistency during the set, playing well in short stretches, but never long enough to sustain an attack.
That changed in the second set. Coach Sarah Vasquez sat a few of her starters to give time to some of the bench crew, and they rose to the challenge, taking the set 25-23.
It looked like the Yellowjackets were primed to keep that winning spirit alive in the third set. They took a commanding 23-15 lead down the stretch behind the strength of senior middle blocker Zamantha Moctezuma, who led the team with five kills and two blocks.
“Honestly, I was nervous,” Moctezuma said after the game about getting so much playing time. She was excited about her performance. “Everything started to click.”
Then the ladies collapsed. The Eagles went on a dramatic 11-1 run to take the set 26-24.
The third set was the turning point in the match. Afterwards, the Eagles took control in the fourth set winning 25-18.
Coach Vazquez saw some fight in her team in this game. “They did a little bit better this time rather than the last game when we just went belly up.”
With two matches left in the season, senior setter Marissa Herrera shared her goals for the team. “I hope we pick up our momentum and start winning.”
This loss drops the Yellowjackets to 1-4 in the Skyline league, and 4-10 overall on the season.
On October 5, the team travels to Bloomington High for a rematch with the Bruins.
