Colton, CA—Winners of two matches in a row, the Lady Yellowjackets’ tennis team faced off yesterday against the 7-4 San Gorgonio Spartans and lost, 12-6.

All six set victories for the Yellowjackets came from their doubles teams, with each of the three pairs taking two of three sets from the Spartans.

Colton’s best could not topple San Gorgonio’s number one ranked doubles team of seniors Alexa Roman-Serrano and Amares Vega who remained undefeated. The Yellowjacket’s number one and three combos of Shantel Marentes/Jazmin Almazan and Emily Ramirez/Juliette Echauregui pushed Roman-Serrano and Vega to the limit, losing 7-6.

Ramirez and Echauregui were particularly tough, pushing the Spartan ladies to a tiebreaker in the deciding game. Tensions were high as the pressure mounted. “Unfortunately our players were not able to completely capitalize on that,” Coach Omar Menjivar said after the match.

It was on the singles side where Colton struggled, getting swept in all sets by the Spartans. Number two Andrea Quintero put up a great fight against Spartan number two, senior Christa McDowell, losing 6-4.

“This one got away from us,” Menjivar added. “Next time when we meet we are going to be better prepared.”

Colton takes to the courts this Thursday against Kaiser High School at 3 p.m.
