Colton, CA—It was another hot day out on the Colton High tennis courts as the Colton’s girls’ tennis team got back on the winning track, defeating the Bisons from Liberty High, 13-5.

After today’s victory, the Yellowjackets are 2-1 on the young season, and steadily making improvements in their games.

Liberty High, who came into the match 1-4, were overwhelmed by the Yellowjackets from the opening serve.

On the singles side of the net, the Yellowjackets went 7-2. Sophomore standout Shantel Marentes won all three sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1. Her overpowering overhand smash proved to be too much for the Bisons.

Senior Andrea Quintero took two of three sets, defeating the number two and three Bison players, 6-1, 6-2. And junior Rita Mariscal also won two of her three sets against the numbers 2 and three Bisons, 7-6, 6-4.

The double duos continued their strong play, winning six of their nine sets. Number one doubles Sydney Castro and Kimberly Emilio were never seriously challenged, winning their three sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. Castro was especially effective on the court, her powerful forehand keeping the Bisons on their heels.

Number two combo, Juliette Echauregui and Aylene Luna defeated the number two and three teams, 6-3, 6-1. However, the duo of Jasmin Almazan and Briseyda Rodriguez struggled, losing to the Bison’s number one and number three doubles teams. Still, they showed promise by taking out the higher ranked number two team, 6-3.

Liberty High was a last minute opponent. Originally, today’s game was to be between Colton and Rubidoux High School. However, Rubidoux pulled out of the match for unspecified reasons. The Pepper Bough reached out for comment, but calls were not returned.

Girls’ tennis is scheduled to match up on the road against Canyon Springs High tomorrow afternoon.
