Colton, CA—Miscues and unforced errors knocked the Lady Yellowjackets off their game today as the Norte Vista Braves came into Hubbs Gym and served Colton a 3-1 loss.

The match opened with promise as the Yellowjackets gutted out a 25-23 victory.

Afterwards it was all Norte Vista.

The visitors ran off three straight wins, 25-13, 25-14, and 25-20 to take the match.

Colton was led on offense by senior outside hitter Mariah Perez, who racked up three kills on 14 attacks. Her effort on the net kept Colton in the match as Norte Vistas’ senior middle blocker, Alyssa Jimenez and senior outside hitter Jynae Umi relentlessly attacked the Yellowjacket defense.

On the defensive end, senior libero Elena Torrero whirled all over the court to keep up the Braves attack, picking up a team high 16 service receptions against eight errors.

Errors were the name of the game for the Yellowjackets. They overcame a few in the first set to secure the victory but were unable to get out from under them the rest of they way. The team was a step slow on serves, constantly playing off-balance and reactive.

“We couldn’t really build a rhythm,” Coach Anthony Wade said after the game. “We started off in the hole but couldn’t find a way to dig ourselves out.”

With this loss, the Yellowjackets are now 3-5 overall on the season, with Sunkist league play starting next week.

Head Coach Sarah Vasquez saw a silver lining. “I thought they worked better together as a team, better than they have since our loss to Rubidoux.”

The Lady Yellowjackets’ kick off league play next Tuesday at home against the Arroyo Valley Hawks.
