Colton, CA—The Colton Yellowjacket Girls’ Tennis squad got their 2021-22 season off to a great start by defeating the Arabs of Coachella Valley 11 sets to 7.

The squad, featuring three new players, was led by its doubles teams, who only lost one set of nine against Coachella Valley. The doubles teams of Rita Mariscal/Andrea Quintero, and Jamie Santos/Kimberly Emilio went undefeated against their competition.

On the singles side, after a rough start against Coachella Valley’s star, Lydia Rodriguez, CHS standout Chantel Marentes went 6-1, 6-2 in her remaining sets. Her strong backhand made it hard for Coachella Valley’s players to keep up with her on the court.

For Head Coach Jose Omar, this preseason match was about feeling out the team, seeing where chemistry lies with the doubles combinations, and how the girls handle the competition. “In life or in sports, you win or you learn,” he said, summing up his coaching philosophy.

The Yellowjackets got a bit of both in this match.

Their next match is next Tuesday, August 31 at Hillcrest High School.
