The Lakeside Lancers defeated the Colton Yellowjackets 2-1 in Tuesday’s CIF-SS Division 5 semifinal game.

After an inspirational pregame speech given by Head Coach Armando Ponce, the Jackets entered the game with their sights set on victory. However, the course of a game of this caliber is typically unpredictable.

The ball bounced back and forth during the course of the first half, the Yellowjacket defense successfully stopping the Lancers’ attempts. Senior Ismael Carlin broke through the Lakeside defense, scoring the first goal of the game. The goal was assisted by senior Luis Lorenzo. The Jackets ended the first half with a 1-0 lead over the Lancers.

As the boys took the field for the second half, Pitbull’s hit single “Give Me Everything” played over the stadium speakers and the boys huddled together singing aloud the chorus. Despite the positive energy, to the Yellowjackets’ demise, the course of the game took a drastic turn. Lakeside’s Jesus Herrera scored their first goal, tying up the game 1-1.

With roughly twenty minutes left in the second half, Lakeside’s Ricky Ruiz gave the Lancers their 2-1 lead after barely driving the ball past Colton senior goalkeeper Kenny Koperski’s hand in a PK. In the 37th minute of the second half, senior Cesar Barajas was given a shot at his own PK. Unfortunately, Lakeside goalkeeper Jose Chavez successfully blocked Barajas’ shot.

The Jackets were unable to regain momentum in the final moments. As the final whistle blew, deep emotion aroused from the Jackets.

The Pepper Bough staff would like to congratulate the boys soccer team on all their accomplishments this season and for making Colton High School history.
