KVCR Workshop Leaves a Huge Impact on High School Students

On November 4, 2017, Assembly member Eloise Gomez Reyes worked as a partnership with KVCR, located right by San Bernardino Valley College,and held an Media & Communication workshop. It started from 9 and ended to 12, with an all tour of the studio of KVCR and had a special celebrity guest band perform called, Kevin Never Talks.

This workshop event had selected 30 determined high school students from different schools, that all share the same interest in Media & Communications. Darrell Frye, a district representative, states, “I had tons of applications emailed to me, and I had to decide on who to accept. You were all chosen for a reason.” Every student that had been accepted had a very unique confidence, drive, and hunger for the path of Media & Communications.

The workshop had a very inspiring atmosphere, with creative thinkers and positive attitudes. It started off with breakfast refreshments being provided, and the ability to get settled within a welcoming environment. The event soon started with a welcoming to Eloise Gomez Reyes, who approached everybody with a friendly smile and handshake.

The confrontations within everybody at KVCR grew comfortable in a short time period, with a little social game; stating your name and a special something about your personality such as: your favorite TV show, if you could visit anywhere in the world where would it be, and why you are drawn towards Media & Communications. Soon after, five teams were formed for a team competition.

The competition was broken down to parts of a television series, and was timed down to seven minutes. It was to be created of creative aspects, that consists of what types of audience would approach the series, a thrilling slogan, etc. There were judges, that gave pinpoints about the creative parts they adored, and room for improvement. Eloise Gomez Reyes remarked about every student within the competition,”all of you students are phenomenal, there is a creativity that strikes all of you.”

The tour of the studio represented an exciting reveal of the controls within the radio and television stations, and the behind the scenes technical jobs. They showed the responsibilities and importance within the production of the Media & Communications field. It captured the thrill of people that work within this field, it shows that they truly love the career they had pursued into.

The event started to close with a panel discussion with questions that sparked a great discussion. The questions held how the professionals got involved with Media & Communications, and what advice they would give their high school selves. Many students were able to ask questions they were determined to learn more know about. The event officially closed with a few songs presented by Kevin Never Talks. The workshop is sure to leave these students feeling more motivated, knowledgeable, and driven.
