The Voice Trumps American Idol

The Voice Trumps American Idol

The Voice premiered on the television network NBC, on April 26, 2011. Within this season, the show had close to 12 million viewers. The singing competition is currently on NBC, where the second season premiered after the broadcast of the Super Bowl on February 5, 2012. This airing of the show had over 17 million viewers. The show consists of four experienced judges who range in different genres of music and have had very successful singing careers. These four judges are Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton.

The Voice is made up of blind auditions, battle rounds, and live performances. In the blind auditions, the coaches pick who they want on their team, based strictly on their voices. They have about one minute to decide whether they want the person on their team or not. Also, if more than one coach wants the singer, then the choice of who the contestant goes with is up to the performer. In the end, each coach has 12 people on their team. After the coaches have their teams, they go to the battle rounds. This is where each coach picks two opponents from their own team to compete against each other in a performance. The contestants go head-to-head and sing duets together. In the end, the coach has to make the difficult decision as to which one they want to send home, and which they would like to keep on their team. This phase of The Voice leaves 6 performers on each team.

After this process, the coaches get to help their team on their songs for their live performances. Two teams, consisting of 12 singers perform each week to gain America’s votes so that they can be saved from elimination. However, the coaches also have an equal chance to save their performers each week. This process continues until the finals, where only one singer is left from each team. The winner from the final 4 is based solely on the audience’s votes.

Overall, The Voice has a great, entertaining process of finding its winner which allows authenticity in the singers’ voices and the choice of getting to pick who they want to be coached by, if given the opportunity. Whereas shows like American Idol are typical and sometimes base their choices on appearances. The Voice’s audience seems to be increasing by each season, and with a third season on the way, American Idol has some competition coming their way.
