The border of Iraq and Iran experienced a catastrophic 7.3 magnitude earthquake. It is reportedly the deadliest earthquake of 2017 so far. It is considered deadly because of the large casualty rate. Numbers between 530-580 documented deaths. As far as injuries go, a reported 7,460 civilians were said to be hurt by the natural disaster.

A majority of the injuries were reported in the province of Iran; which was near the epicenter of the earthquake. Search and Rescue teams are being administered to designated locations to seek bodies under the debris of the quake. Not only did it damage people’s lives but the earthquake took a toll on public buildings including the hospital in which is being used to treat the patients in need. An astonishing 70,000 people were left without a home. Most of the homes were not sustained to live past a severe quake of this magnitude.

The earthquake triggered a mass amount of landslides making it far more difficult for rescue efforts to continue. The earthquake struck a heavily populated region at a late cold night in the Middle East. The earthquake was also felt in neighboring nations like Turkey, Israel, and Kuwait. The death toll is only rising and already is considered the deadliest earthquake of the year.

Rescue efforts are still underway and the recovery process begins. As you can see families sleeping outside in the below freezing temperatures and buildings that have been torn to shreds.
