Shots fired! Wait never mind…

The concept of a right to bear arms existed as an English common law long before the final ratification of the Bill of Rights. Self-defense is a natural human instinct, as well as anger. Guns in the hands of the angry is not a safe combination.

On Tuesday, January 5th, President Barack Obama gave a lucid speech expressing his beliefs on America’s gun control problem and his plans to minimize this sort of violence.

In response to the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Obama gave a personal and emotional speech at the White House referencing back the the first grade victims in Newtown, Connecticut. When he did so, he surprised the audience with an unexpected weep. Introduced by Mark Barden, the father of one of the Sandy Hook shooting victims, Obama began with the remembrance of a sitting member of congress along with 18 others that were shot at a supermarket in Tucson, Arizona.

Every single year, more than 30,000 Americans have lost their lives cut short by guns. Suicides, domestic violence, gang shootouts, accidents, etc. Obama states “The United States of America is not the only country on Earth with violence or dangerous people… But we are the only advanced country on Earth that sees this kind of mass violence erupt with this kind of frequency.” Disappointed on how America has become numb this these incidents and started seeing them as normal, Obama has put together a team to solve this problem.Together, Obama’s team came up with four new regulations:

Number one: Anybody in the business of selling firearms must get a license and conduct background checks. This includes the development of a new 21st-century background check system.

Number two: Obama will do everything he can to ensure the smart and effective enforcement of gun safety laws that are already on the books along with the addition of 200 more ATF agents. Gun holders also needs to report more lost or stolen guns on a timely basis.

Number three: Obama will invest $500 million to expand the country access to treatment for mental health.

“A lot of our work is to prevent people from hurting themselves”, quoted Obama.

Number four: Boost gun safety technology.

Obama states “If we can set it up so you can’t unlock your phone unless you got the right fingerprint, why can’t we do the same thing with guns?”
