Writing Center to debut on campus soon

Students will be able to get help from tutors on essays and other writing projects

Jeremiah Dollins, a former English/Honors English 1 and Film Studies teacher who is now an English TOA, (that’s “teacher on assignment”) has decided to introduce a Writing Center to Colton High School to benefit students and faculty.

“Part of my job description is to come up with an intervention program in order to be able to help students become better writers,” Dollins explains.

A Writing Center seemed like the perfect thing to do, in this case. So, the question is, what exactly IS  a Writing Center? How will it work? Where will it be?

“The Writing Center will be a place for our student population to come and get peer assistance with their work,” according to Dollins. The center will be having peer tutors instead of teacher(s) or paid college tutors because of budget cuts, but peer tutors will be more effective in the long run. Dollins is currently selecting and training tutors for the center.

The center will be in full swing about two weeks into 2nd semester, says Dollins. It will be housed in a location to be determined, so check the bulletins and the Pepper Bough for a complete rundown of where, when and how–and get those essays ready to be edited!
