Colton High School opened in 1895. It is one of the oldest high schools in the Inland Empire. In this daily feature, we celebrate Colton High’s rich history.

The Colton High School Marching Band is part of an exclusive club that includes Beyoncé, Prince, The Rolling Stones, The Weeknd and a who’s who of notable Super Bowl halftime performers.

In 1987, 34 members of the Colton High School Yellowjacket Marching Band were selected to play in the Super Bowl XXI halftime show. The students, all male, were selected among hundreds of exemplary musicians from across Southern California.

The game was held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, with the theme for the halftime show saluting “Hollywood’s 100th Anniversary.” George Burns was the emcee for the performance, which also featured drill teams and dancers.

Super Bowl XXI took place on January 25, 1987 between the Denver Broncos and New York Giants. After Denver took a 10-7 lead in the first quarter, the Giants defense dominated, shutting down John Elway’s Broncos on their way to a 39-20 victory.
