Cardi B won album of the year and became the first solo female artist to win Best Album at the 61st Grammy Awards for her album called Invasion of Privacy. This being the first time the award has been given to a female solo artist in Grammy history. Her fellow nominees included Pusha T’s Daytona, Travis Scott ASTROWORLD, Mac Miller, who passed away in September, Swimming, and Nipsey Hussle Victory Lap. Miller’s family was also rooting for Cardi B if he didn’t win the award.

Cardi B also received five nominations at the Grammys this year, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year for “I like it”, Best Rap Performance for “Be Careful,” and Best pop duo/Group Performance for her collaboration with Maroon 5 on “Girls like you”. She then took the stage with her date Offset to accept the award with a speech.

In that speech, she shouted out a lot of people like her husband, Offset, saying “You, husband, thank you,” she said. “Seriously, he was like, ‘You gon’ do this album, girl. We gon’ have this baby and we gon’ make this album,’” and their daughter by quoting, “I want to thank my daughter. I’m not just saying thank you because she’s my daughter. When I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete,” Cardi revealed. “I had three songs that I was for sure having. We was like, we have to get this album done so I can shoot these videos while I’m still not showing. It was very long nights.”

Cardi B also said, “I read an article that said that Mac Miller’s family said that if he don’t win, they want me to win, so I’m sharing this Grammy with you. Rest in peace!” she stated.

But shortly after her winning her Grammy, people started to attack her online saying she didn’t deserve the award, leading to Cardi B going onto Instagram to defend herself which later led to her deactivating her Instagram account. This led to other celebrities going to social media trying to defend Cardi B from all of the hate she was receiving for winning Album of the Year.
