Neil Blomkamp is notorious for his sci-fi action-thrillers and for his well known movie District 9 that became a very successful movie. Now Blomkamp has done it again, producing Elysium, another science fiction action-thriller. The movie was release to the box office on August 9. The weekend that the movie was released, it raked in an estimated $30.5 million. Even with the amount of money they made the ticket sales did come a little short compared to District 9 that took $7 million higher. Elysium still managed to be the number one movie in the North American theaters. It is a great movie to watch if you love robots, futurist backgrounds, and fighting. The movie is rated R with a lot of violence so viewer suggestion is advised.

The movie is set in 2154, where only two classes exist, the wealthy and the poor. The wealthy reside in the space station Elysium, where they are free of war, disease, and chaos.

The space station is governed by president Patel (Faran Tahir) who is the antagonist of the movie. The poor are forced to live on Earth where it soon becomes over populated and very hostile. People like Max Da Costa (the movie’s star, Matt Damon) have little chances to ever reach Elysium. Max is forced to work on an assembly line where he assembles robots.

Max then is accidentally exposed to a lethal dose of radiation and is giving only five days to live.  Now he must reach Elysium before his time runs out. Max seeks help from a friend that gives him a robotic exo suit that gives him super strength in return for codes from an agent working with president Patel.

Now that he has this suit he can reach Elysium but he has to go through the secret agent Kruger (the villain of the story, played by Sharlto Copely) to get there. Patel sends him to hunt down Max and retrieve the precious data he acquired by killing and downloading it from her agents brain. Crugger is a vicious man that kills anyone that attempts to go to Elysium illegally. Max manages to reach Elysium and goes through the Elysium security. He manages to reset the system in Elysium and give all people on Earth the chance to be healed of all ailments. The only thing is that it would cost him life and he does it for the people of Earth who have been suffering.  It is a great movie and I highly recommend it if you loved Blomkomp’s District 9.
