There was something about the Varsity offense on Friday that made them deliver the blowout over Rialto, 42-9, and give the home Colton crowd something to cheer for. After getting embarrassed by  Etiwanda in the season opener, they made a huge statement by highlighting their outstanding and electrifying offense and defense. Head Coach Chris Mailo said about the game, “I felt good, we won. Y’know a win is a win–whether it’s a blowout, or we win by one.”

The team was really on its top game for its first home game. Running Back/Wide Receiver DeAndre Graham and Strong Safety/Running Back LaVonte Wilson, both seniors, showing their tremendous speed and athleticism, contributed a combined six touchdowns in the game. (Graham scored a fourth that was called back.) Graham shared his thoughts about the three touchdowns he scored, saying, “Amazing. My line did a great job stealing the hose for me so I can do that. My first touchdown after coming off of injuries; it was a great game. [I] did better than I thought.”

Wilson attributed his scoring surge to one thing: “Teamwork. That’s the only way. I got it through my offensive line. It felt good to bounce back from our last game from last week, I’m proud of my team.”

Defense against Rialto
The Yellowjackets mighty D takes aim against the Rialto Knights at Memorial Stadium.

The game also marked the first year varsity home game debut for Left Outside Linebacker, Sophomore Xavier Ames, who recently was moved up from JV to Varsity and made his presence felt on defense by making three tackles and contributing two sacks.  He spoke about his home-game debut, “I felt my performance was very good and thanks to my teammates, I was able to make some plays and help us win. I felt like we all played as a team and we did what we have to do to get the win on Friday.”

Colton next takes on league rival Cajon in an away game on Friday the 19th and look to pick up another win to their season record.
