Skaters rejoice as skateboarding makes it into the Olympic games

Olympics 2020 is getting skateboarding, a fast growing sport that started around the 1960s that quickly grew to worldwide popularity, added to its new sports for its Tokyo games. While most members of society consider skating an activity that only punk kids do it actually requires a lot of patience, practice, and skill. Skateboarding being added to the Olympics is a huge achievement for the culture, because even though there are multiple skating competitions like the X Games, the Dew Tour, and the Street League, being added to the Olympics takes skating to a worldwide level and will gain international recognition.

There is much controversy in the skateboarding world about being added to the Olympics–many people do not want skating to be added because, they contend, it would take away the “pureness” and “originality” out of the sport. A recent problem with skating is that when a lot of the contests were created people started skating just to become famous and wealthy when having fun should be the main reason you skate.

I believe that skating should be added to the Olympics because while it is a sport that has been seen as very counterculture, it is also a legitimate sport that is very skill oriented. But the question is can and will skating handle its own in the very clean cut Olympics? I think yes!
