Teen pregnancy: an issue with many sides

Teen pregnancy has always been a big issue in our country. Each year 750,000 teens get pregnant in the U.S alone. We look from the outside and most see young girls with what we feel are bad futures and dumb decisions, but I’ve learned to never judge someone if you haven’t walked in their shoes.

What’s it like for teen moms and dads? Let’s take a look at a teen mother from CHS: Andrea Perez ,a sophomore at Colton High, gave birth to her daughter at the age of 15. She is still with her boyfriend and she says that they fight a lot less than they used to. Her ambition to explore the world after high school was delayed because of the birth of her daughter.  She spends most of her time taking care of her child rather than going out like a usual teen with no responsibilities.

But teen pregnancy is not just an issue that affects young girls. Anthony Gomez is a CHS senior with a baby daughter and although he had a child young just like Perez, his story is different because he is a male.  Instead of his parents not talking to him or being angry with him they were happy to be having a grandchild. He is now engaged to mother of his child and he said that they were happier after they had their child together. He sees himself doing big things in the future to provide for his daughter and kids that he will soon have.

Most stories we hear about teen pregnancy are terrible—things such as the students dropping out of school, raising the children alone, or even aborting the child. And yes, situations like those do happen, occasionally there are still good stories that happen with luck. Most teens will not stop having sex but you can prevent teen pregnancy by having safe sex. It’s never too late to be a parent, so why start early?
