Guns in every home is asking for trouble

A small town in Georgia wants to have every household in the area to own a firearm in their homes. If the law is passed then this would become the 2nd town in the state of Georgia to require that every home own a gun.

City council members in Nelson, a suburb of Atlanta, have all supported this gun measure, yet they still have another chance to look into this proposal once again before they decide whether the council should look at it or not in April.

This does not seem to be a good idea because now everyone will know that those homes have firearms and anyone looking to break in will be prepared and most likely bring more fire power with them.  I can understand where this proposal would come from because of all the chaos that has been going on with massive shootings. Yet they should focus also on the fact that many children in the past have gotten a hold of their parent’s firearms and have unintentionally fired them. The focus is on protecting lives, and having a firearm in every household can be dangerous.

Not every adult is ready for the responsibility of having a firearm in their home and especially not ready to use a firearm in case of an emergency. By making it a requirement for every home to have a firearm then you can be giving someone who should not have guns the ability to have one in their own home! How can you say that the town would be safer this way knowing that some people are incapable of handling a firearm with full responsibility? An owner of a firearm should know how to lock and hide and use a firearm correctly and safely, but yet handing out guns to the world would be giving everyone the right to shoot if they thought someone would be intruding into their homes. Kids have a habit of some times sneaking out at night, what would happen if that child came back sneaking in, and got shot? Whose responsibility would that become–the parents’ or the states ,for letting every home hold a firearm?

There are alarm systems that are meant to help keep intruders out of homes. These alarms have no wrong doing, they are not capable of harming a person, but they do have the capability to instantly notify the police in case of any emergency. The police are the first notified and they are trained to protect you from any harm, the police should be the ones holding those firearms in case of any emergency.

Recently, the CHS Publications Department experienced a major theft as over $20,000 in photography equipment was stolen from our studio over Spring Break. This included all cameras. Any amount you donate will help rebuild our program. Thank you!
