New Horse Slaughter Law An Abomination

New Horse Slaughter Law An Abomination

You may have heard that President Obama has signed a congressional spending bill approving the USDA return of inspections on horse meat plants. Yes, this has brought many people different perspectives on the new law; animal rights activists are upset that the U.S. would agree to such a terrible thing. But this has also brought joy to meat company owners.
Many are saying that most of the people who are not agreeing with this are ones who do not own horses–yet how can horse owners agree to this? I mean, they are pets: you feed them, care for them, and love them. I’m sure many horse owners consider their horses as family. Knowing that horses out there have to suffer must shatter many hearts because this could be happening to your horse as well. Just because some horses are not as useful as others they should not be slaughtered–they should be cared and loved for like any other pets. It is said by veterans that a horse must be shot several times and even then are still a bit actively moving this is not a good in any way; this method of killing horses is brutal and is generally called slaughter and should not be something to be okay with.

This new law approves horse slaughter houses which had been voided in 2007. Why has it been brought back now? Well, mainly because of drought conditions which have caused a couple of horse owners to abandon their horses for economic reasons and shortage of water. Proponents argue that this will be a good thing for horses, because owners have lost value thanks to the drought and will cause many to think twice about abandoning their horses and leaving them to die. Another argument goes that this law approves of horse slaughter houses but if it is not inspected by the USDA then the meat will not be allowed out of state.

Yes, horses are considered livestock, but they have been much more to us in the United States–more than anywhere, they have became human friends and family to man–so why must this be approved? Yes, several horse owners agree with this law because they say that horse value had to be increased; people had began to treat horses like nothing for loss of money and not being able to pay for their food many of these horses had been transported to slaughter houses in Mexico so now this will no longer be needed here in the United States it is approved to have horse slaughter houses. This is a shame. What’s next–dogs and cats being slaughtered and sold?
