Bodybuilding has come a long way from the days of Charles Atlas in the 1940s, but now bodybuilding seems to be embracing their roots and going retro/throwback.

The men’s “classic physique” is a new division in the IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilders). In this division the main goal is to have the body of the golden era bodybuilders like Arnold Schwarzenegger, (pictured, right, long before he became the “Governator”) Frank Zane, or Franco Columbo. These classic bodybuilders all have a good split of mass, aesthetics, and the classic V taper. They have five mandatory poses.

The first one is called front double biceps. This pose starts from the ground up to display the thighs and the biceps the peak and the sweeps of the muscle bellies.

The second pose is the side chest. In this pose you can see the thickness and the striation of the chest.

The third is the back double biceps; this shows off the peaks of the biceps, the detail in the back, and the hamstrings’ development.

The fourth is referred to as abdominals and thighs. This pose really shows the teardrop in the quad and the core development.

The last pose is called favorite classic pose. In this final pose they can do any pose they like in the context that it is reminiscent of the golden era physiques.

This new division in the IFBB has long been awaited because of modern bodybuilders look like production line physiques. Many look the same and it becomes very hard to really find a bodybuilder with uniqueness. The main purpose of this division is to bring back the aesthetics  and the symmetry of the male body. This brings back the good days of bodybuilding before “freakier and bigger” was better. There is much more to come of this division and hopefully this is the new big thing in the fitness industry.
