Rock On!..To The Devaluation Of Music

Manuel Solorzano, Reporter

For about a decade, mainstream music has had something missing. When comparing it to past eras popular music, you can see that there is a lack of innovation in the mainstream market in this day in age. Nowadays, when you turn on the radio you might be riddled with a lot of pop artists that use nothing but digitally manufactured music in their music and autotune galore in the case of some. This is the case of many rap or hip hop artists as well. It’s not all the fault of the artists tho, because it can also be attributed to the mainstream audience who don’t actively demand for much innovation or only want that type of music delivered to them. It’s possible that the music is just part of an era that with time will eventually die out and a new type of music will immerge in the mainstream space. But it would be interesting to compare this decade of popular music to others.

To start off, let’s compare this decade to the 60’s. The 60’s brought with them a the famed british invasion of music which drastically altered popular music. From the Rolling Stones, to the Kinks, and of course the fab four The Beatles. The decade brought with it innovative styles of rock with much experimentation present. The same goes with much of the 70’s and 80’s. Bands ranging from Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Nirvana and many more that introduced us to the worldwide experience of rock.
