Synergy Day Proves to be an Eye-Opening Experience

Synergy+Day+Proves+to+be+an+Eye-Opening+Experience

On Wednesday February 29th, Synergy came to Colton High.  For those of you who don’t already know, Synergy is an event that allows students to forget the “cliques” that divide them from each other; both students and staff members were in attendance.
Synergy was  truly an event that changed perspectives, according to many of those who attended, such as Senior Genesis Flores. “I gained respect for some people,” Flores said. “I look at them in a new, positive perspective. It also made me want to make amends with people.”
Although some may have been uncomfortable with sharing personal stories, nearly everyone came out of their shells and had fun participating in the activities. History teacher Deborah Villegas said that it was “difficult to open up because of the status of teacher and student,”  and in order for her  to open up, she had to put aside her title as teacher and focus on the fact that everyone there were peers.
It was great to see everyone respect and get along with each other; Synergy Day really had an influential impact on people, because it was a chance to see that many of the strangers around you might be going through the same kinds of issues as you. Junior Zephaniah Duhart said that her favorite activity was Cross the Line, where one crosses over to the other side of the line when you relate to a statement that is said aloud. “You find things out about people  that you wouldn’t expect, and it gives you a different perspective on people’s lives,” said Duhart.
Peer leaders shared the feeling of being a part of something bigger than themselves, and were able to help in making a change in people’s lives. At the end of the day, various people got up and shared their views on Synergy; their statements were all along the lines that we need to have Synergy events more often, and that our school does not necessarily have to correspond with the labels it might have been given in the past, if we change our attitudes and refuse to “judge the book by its cover.” Even with small steps taken each day, we can change the way Colton High School is seen from the outside, as well as how it functions on the inside.
